Brussels \u2013 In Ceuta, \u201cthe situation is different from that at the start of the month\u201d because \u201cnew attempts at illegal entry have been successfully thwarted\u201d and \u201cnew measures have been taken\u201d to deal with the latest developments, European Commission spokesperson, Markus Lammert<\/strong> reiterated<\/a> today (25 August), regarding the Spanish exclave where, between 30 and 31 July, around 60,000 migrants from Morocco entered the country<\/a>, triggering a crisis which the European Union is still trying to resolve. <\/p>\n

During the press briefing, Lammert announced that the Commission received a formal \u201cemergency funding\u201d request from Spain yesterday <\/strong>to assist with the recent events affecting the country. \u201cWe are working to assess the request as a matter of the highest priority to reach a swift decision,\u201d said the spokesperson, adding that the Commission is \u201cready to provide further support, including through EU agencies.” The request is said to include measures aimed at \u201cstrengthening border protection and security infrastructure,\u201d and \u201cestablishing adequate reception capacity, including for unaccompanied minors.\u201d However, it did not provide any further detail on the<\/strong> “details of the content, timing, and nature of the request.”<\/a> <\/strong>Among the priorities for action, the spokesperson also mentioned the \u201capproximately one thousand people still present in Ceuta\u201d, for whom the EU aims to \u201censure the rapid repatriation of all those who are there illegally.\u201d <\/p>\n

It also did not provide much information about Italy and Spain’s suspension of the Schengen<\/a> area. With effect from 1 August 2026, Italy temporarily suspended its participation in the Schengen Agreement for connections with Spain, triggering a diplomatic crisis that prompted the Madrid government to introduce similar controls on arrivals from Italy. Lammert stated that last week the Commission received \u201ctemporary notifications\u201d from the two states<\/strong>, which \u201cwill remain in force until the beginning of September.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regarding calls from some Italian politicians for compensation for the repatriation of migrants from secondary movements<\/a>, in line with the Dublin Regulation and the new Migration Pact, the spokesperson just praised<\/a> the \u201cexcellent results\u201d of the new \u201capproach to migration\u201d set out in the Migration and Asylum Pact<\/a>. Recently, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and Ireland have announced that they will resume sending asylum seekers who came from Italy back to Italy. These are the so-called \u2018Dublin cases\u2019, migrants who have applied for international protection in the country where they first arrived.<\/strong> After being identified, they did not remain in the country of arrival but subsequently moved to another country.
