Brussels \u2013 The European Union is ready to take further measures against Iran. This is set out in writing in the statement<\/a> issued on the occasion of today\u2019s (31 August) and 1 September meetings of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in Asheville, in the United States.<\/p>\n

 The Union points out that it has \u201cconsistently urged Iran to curb its nuclear programme, and its ballistic missile programme, refrain from destabilising activities in the region and in Europe, stop its military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and cease the violence and repression against its own people.\u201d It stressed that \u201ccontinued diplomatic efforts are necessary to reach a peace settlement, restore regional stability and ensure full freedom of navigation and safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d And, in light of the \u201cextensive sanctions\u201d adopted by the 27 Member States \u201cto prevent Iran from exploiting the global economy and financial system to sustain its hostile actions and undermine international security, the EU \u201cremains ready to take further measures<\/strong>, where necessary, to safeguard its security and interests, including freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, the EU applauds the US measures and \u201cwelcomes efforts at ensuring that Iran ceases its destabilising activities and engages in peace negotiations with good faith, also through additional economic pressure, including through the US led Operation Economic Outcast.<\/a>\u201d In this context, \u201cit will continue to work closely with the United States and other G7 and international partners to maintain pressure on Iran and contribute to de-escalation and regional stability.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
