And 2026 saw the \u201cworst fire season on record.\u201d The European Commissioner for Crisis Management,&nbsp;<strong>Hadja<\/strong> <strong>Lahbib,<\/strong>&nbsp;reiterated this today (1 September) at the European Parliament during a debate on the European Union\u2019s response to this summer\u2019s forest wildfires. The&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>ENVI Committee<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the European Parliament\u2019s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, organised the meeting<\/span>.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;<strong>This year, 700,000 hectares have gone up in smoke,<\/strong>&#8221; Lahbib emphasised. This is \u201chigher than the average for previous years,\u201d meaning that many \u201cpilots and firefighters lost their lives\u201d while on duty. According to the Commissioner, three reasons made the just-ended summer season exceptional. The first: compared with other years, <strong>\u201cthe fires started earlier than usual\u201d, with the Netherlands and the Czech Republic among the first to be affected<\/strong>. Second, \u201cthey moved northwards\u201d across the continent; on this point, Lahbib highlighted <strong>Scotland<\/strong>, <strong>Belgium<\/strong>, and <strong>Greenland<\/strong> as among those affected. The final point is that this year the fires have threatened not only forests, but also towns and cities. \u201c<strong>France saw the largest evacuation since the end of the Second World War,<\/strong>\u201d Lahbib noted.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With forests ablaze across Europe, the European Commission has deployed a record number of firefighters, aircraft, and emergency experts as part of the civil protection mechanism, the framework through which EU Member States and participating countries cooperate on disaster prevention, preparedness and response. \u201c800 firefighters from 14 countries have been deployed to three high-risk countries,\u201d the Commissioner stated. A number \u201cthree times higher than that deployed in 2022.\u201d It has been \u201cactivated ten times both within and outside the Union,\u201d with \u201c40 aircraft and 18 teams\u201d to assist neighbouring states as well. \u201c<strong>Solidarity did not stop at our borders;
