August 2026 thus surpasses the previous August records set in 2023 and 2024 and, together with July 2023, becomes the hottest month ever recorded in the dataset compiled by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qMYqUG_convSearchResultHighlightRoot qMYqUG_convSearchResultTextHighlightSafari\">\n<div>\n<section class=\"text-token-text-primary w-full focus:outline-none has-data-writing-block:pointer-events-none [&amp;:has([data-writing-block])&gt;*]:pointer-events-auto R6Vx5W_threadScrollVars scroll-mb-[calc(var(--scroll-root-safe-area-inset-bottom,0px)+var(--thread-response-height))] scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div class=\"text-base my-auto mx-auto pb-8 [--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-xs,calc(var(--spacing)*4))] @w-sm\/main:[--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-sm,calc(var(--spacing)*6))] @w-lg\/main:[--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-lg,calc(var(--spacing)*16))] px-(--thread-content-margin)\">\n<div class=\"[--thread-content-max-width:40rem] @w-lg\/main:[--thread-content-max-width:48rem] mx-auto max-w-(--thread-content-max-width) flex-1 group\/turn-messages focus-visible:outline-hidden relative flex w-full min-w-0 flex-col agent-turn\">\n<div class=\"flex max-w-full flex-col gap-4 grow\">\n<div class=\"min-h-8 text-message relative flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 text-start break-words whitespace-normal outline-none keyboard-focused:focus-ring [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-1\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden\">\n<div class=\"fbskMG_root safari-katex-mathml markdown prose dark:prose-invert wrap-break-word w-full light markdown-new-styling\">\n<p>The exceptional heat did not affect the atmosphere alone. <strong>The average surface temperature of the extrapolar oceans (between 60\u00b0S and 60\u00b0N) reached 21.07\u00b0C, the highest August ever recorded<\/strong>, surpassing the previous record of 20.98\u00b0C set in 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/08\/24\/ocean-temperatures-set-new-record-of-21-1-degrees-the-climate-crisis-grows-harder-to-deny\/\">Daily global sea surface temperature&nbsp;also set a record high of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/08\/24\/ocean-temperatures-set-new-record-of-21-1-degrees-the-climate-crisis-grows-harder-to-deny\/\">21.11\u00b0C.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The record-breaking figures were also fuelled by exceptionally high temperatures in the tropical Pacific, where <strong>an El Ni\u00f1o event, potentially one of the strongest ever observed, continues to intensify<\/strong>.&nbsp;Its effects are already visible on land, too: in Indonesia, weather conditions have intensified seasonal wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Europe has experienced yet another summer marked by extreme heat. <strong>The summer of 2026 was the hottest ever recorded in Western Europe<\/strong>, breaking the previous record set in 2003, whilst across the continent as a whole it was the third hottest, after 2024 and 2022. August, with an average temperature of 20.26\u00b0C, was the fourth hottest August ever recorded in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A severe drought accompanied the high temperatures.&nbsp;<strong>Large areas of western, central and eastern Europe experienced drier-than-average conditions<\/strong>, with exceptionally low soil moisture levels following months of below-average rainfall. France, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Romania and Serbia experienced severe drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The situation also affected rivers. <strong>The Rhine, Danube, Southern Bug and Dnieper&nbsp;reached exceptionally low flow rates<\/strong>, whilst particularly low levels have also been observed in the Vistula, Glomma, Rh\u00f4ne, Seine and the Po.<\/p>\n<p>As regards sea ice, in August, the extent of the Arctic sea ice cover was the <strong>twelfth-lowest ever recorded for the month<\/strong>, whilst the Antarctic sea ice was the fourth-lowest on record. According to Copernicus, the overall picture confirms that global warming is fuelling <strong>increasingly intense extreme events, affecting the atmosphere, oceans and hydrological systems simultaneously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tied with July 2023.
