{"id":464781,"date":"2026-09-11T15:00:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T13:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/09\/11\/ue-india-la-commissione-invia-al-consiglio-la-proposta-per-la-firma-dellaccordo-di-libero-scambio\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T16:30:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T14:30:09","slug":"eu-india-the-commission-sends-the-proposal-for-the-signing-of-the-free-trade-agreement-to-the-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/09\/11\/eu-india-the-commission-sends-the-proposal-for-the-signing-of-the-free-trade-agreement-to-the-council\/","title":{"rendered":"EU-India: the Commission sends the proposal for the signing of the free trade agreement to the Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 The European Commission today (11 September) presented its proposals to the Council for the signing and conclusion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/01\/27\/eu-india-seal-the-mother-of-all-deals-tariffs-worth-over-4-billion-euros-to-be-scrapped\/\">Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and India<\/a>, requesting authorisation for its signing and conclusion. \u201cIf authorised by the Council, this will be the largest trade agreement ever concluded by both the EU and India,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_1842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlaymont Building&nbsp;reiterates<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Commission, once adopted and brought into force, \u201cthe agreement will improve market access, reduce tariffs, remove unnecessary trade barriers, and provide predictable rules for trade and investment between the EU and India.\u201d The EU and India already trade goods and services worth over \u20ac180 billion a year, supporting almost 800,000 jobs in the EU. \u201cThis agreement will eliminate or reduce tariffs on 96 per cent of EU exports of goods to India. Overall, the tariff reductions will save around \u20ac4 billion a year in duties on European products. It will make it easier for European companies to access the Indian market and compete on a more level playing field, while ensuring that consumers benefit from greater choice and more competitive prices,\u201d the Berlaymont Building points out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The proposal put forward is in line with the fast-track procedure established by the Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security,&nbsp;<strong>Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>, earlier this year, which aims to speed up the implementation of FTAs: a step that Brussels describes as \u201ccrucial at a time of geopolitical uncertainty and growing pressure on the global trading system.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At a time of trade tensions, particularly with its long-standing ally the US, Brussels believes that \u201cthe EU-India Free Trade Agreement reflects the EU\u2019s commitment to strengthening economic ties with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region.\u201d With its proposals, the Commission is seeking the Council\u2019s approval to sign the agreements, which will then require the consent of the European Parliament before they can be concluded and enter into force.
