The Italian candidate, a former member of the ESMA board, was backed by&nbsp;527 votes, whilst 52 voted against and 86 abstained (in a secret ballot).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Comporti\u2019s appointment, which the Council of the EU must formally adopt, has passed all the previous stages:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/07\/22\/the-eu-27-choose-italian-comporti-to-head-esma-giorgetti-a-tribute-to-the-individual-and-to-italy\/\">on 22 July<\/a> the twenty-seven ambassadors of the EU Member States had nominated him as a candidate for the presidency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esma.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)<\/a>, with 17 votes in favour and 10 against (in a secret ballot), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/09\/02\/the-european-parliament-gives-the-green-light-to-italian-carlo-comporti-to-head-esma\/\">on 2 September<\/a>, the European Parliament\u2019s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) had given Comporti the green light with a majority of 43 votes in favour, one against and three abstentions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 At its plenary session today (15 September), the European Parliament confirmed the appointment of Carlo Comporti as the new Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
