Brussels \u2013 The European Democracy Shield adopted last November? \u201cWe have made very good progress since then,\u201d but it is not enough. \u201cIn the coming weeks, we will be presenting further initiatives, including a review of the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in electoral processes, as well as a recommendation on an issue I know is of direct interest to many of you: safety in politics.<\/strong>\u201d This was stated<\/a> today (30 September) <\/span>by the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath<\/strong>, at the European Parliament during<\/span> the second European Union Forum on Parliamentary Democracy<\/a>. The event was attended by members of national parliaments and the European Parliament, as well as civil society organisations and experts, all united by the desire to \u201cstrengthen democratic resilience and bolster citizens\u2019 trust in democratic institutions.\u201d <\/p>\n

On the subject of safety in politics, the Commissioner reiterated: “We know that for women, people from minority backgrounds and those involved in local politics <\/strong>\u2013 individuals who, by their very nature,
\nwant to and have to have a lot of direct contact with the people, an aspect that is the essence of democracy, but which can also lead to vulnerability and
\nexposure to those who wish to cause harm \u2013 it is essential to address this issue, and we are keen to do so<\/strong>“.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the European Commission is already addressing \u201ccertain key areas,\u201d such as \u201cthe information ecosystem\u201d \u2013 so that citizens can \u201cnavigate the current, complex online information landscape\u201d \u2013 and the promotion of \u201cfree and fair elections\u201d across the Union, further action is needed. \u201cSo we look forward to bringing that forward as well,\u201d he concluded. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
