Brussels \u2013 \u201cPutin knows he will never prevail over NATO,\u201d but more must be done to stop him. A very clear message, emphasised<\/a> today (30 September) by the NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte<\/strong>, to the Atlantic Alliance\u2019s partners. During his address at the Euronews<\/em> Defence and Space Summit, the Secretary-General was asked whether there was \u201ca threat or escalation such as to make the risk of nuclear weapons being used against the Baltic states a real possibility.\u201d The question came after, just a few hours earlier, the Russian Federation had sent a letter<\/a> to NATO in which it had threatened that if \u201cits territory \u2013 including the Kaliningrad exclave \u2013 were to come under any threat, it would resort to its nuclear arsenal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the secretary, it is important to emphasise that NATO is \u201ca defensive alliance\u201d and to \u201creiterate the call for an end to the war in Ukraine and to nuclear threats.\u201d And it is here \u201cthat we, as Europeans, Americans and Canadians, can help ensure they have what they need,\u201d he explained. Rutte\u2019s appeal is for Patriot missiles<\/strong> \u2013 a long-range surface-to-air missile system designed for air and missile defence \u2013 to be sent or sold to Ukraine as they near the end of their service life<\/a>. Before the war in Iran, the United States was Ukraine\u2019s largest supplier, but due to the opening of a new front, it has reduced its sales, while Kyiv needs them to cope with the coming winter. <\/p>\n

The Dutch official had expected that, at the latest NATO summit held in Ankara, \u201cthe matter would be finalised,\u201d enabling the partners to obtain \u201cthe necessary licences for the production\u201d of the missiles. Now, although \u201cdiscussions are ongoing,\u201d this will not help the Ukrainians \u201cin the short term, as building these missiles takes a long time,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cFor the coming winter and for the weeks and months ahead, they simply need more interceptors,\u201d he said, calling for the provision of \u201cwhatever you can: it means saving lives,\u201d he concluded. <\/p>\n

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, reiterated this call on Monday (28 September) at the EU Defence Council: \u201cAir defence is the number one priority; missile production takes time, and we need the Patriots now,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
