This is less a matter of speculation than a necessity to safeguard the eurozone economy.&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The reason is that, as the ECB\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/ecb\/decisions\/govc\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Executive Board<\/a> concludes, \u201c<strong>a further rise in long-term interest rates could adversely affect growth.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/span>&nbsp;This is probably one of the key passages in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/press\/accounts\/2026\/html\/ecb.mg261008~a10153d090.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minutes of the meeting<\/a> of 10 September, when interest rates were raised. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the many factors and various indicators discussed at the meeting, the ECB ultimately appears to have taken into account the impact of monetary policy decisions on the overall performance of the eurozone. The stated objective of maintaining price stability and combating rising inflation now appears to clash with the need to avoid exacerbating the situation. With the ECB leaning towards a pause to avert adverse effects on businesses, households and investors, it is now up to national governments to take action.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u201cStructural reform remained necessary to support higher potential growth,\u201d according to the position expressed by the members of the ECB\u2019s Governing Council. In this regard, general concern has been expressed about \u201cthe continued weak momentum of reform efforts\u201d and \u201cthe time lags involved,\u201d which are seen as counterproductive factors, preventing potential reforms from being regarded as \u201can upside risk factor.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On the subject of reforms, in this renewed call to speed up political action, the ECB\u2019s Governing Council urges that public finances be kept in order. According to the minutes of the September meeting, \u201cit was noted that the recent increase&nbsp;in public spending and the rise&nbsp;in long-term government bond yields could add to vulnerabilities over time.\u201d<\/span><\/span> Consequently, \u201c<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>it is important to maintain sound public finances.<\/strong>\u201d This message appears to contrast with Italy\u2019s call for greater flexibility on spending.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The view shared by the Executive Board, as recorded in the minutes of the September meeting.
