Brussels \u2013 Competitiveness must be at the heart of the European Union\u2019s multiannual budget. This call comes from the president of Confindustria, Emanuele Orsini<\/strong>, who held a press conference today (15 October) in Brussels, following his meeting with the European Commissioner for Trade, Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>, and the European Commission\u2019s Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

On the European budget, \u201cwe need to prioritise competitiveness,\u201d he stated, adding that the aim of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) must be to focus on \u201csaving European industries, because we are in a truly very complicated situation, amid a landscape where the United States and China are playing the game and Europe, unfortunately, is merely acting as the referee.\u201d The hope and expectation of the Confindustria summit is therefore that the Commission and the Council \u201ctake very seriously the fact that competitiveness must be at the heart of the matter,\u201d<\/strong> he continued, emphasising that the rise in imports of Chinese products is \u201cleading to the deindustrialisation of Italy and Europe.\u201d In this context, \u201cno country can expect to go it alone.\u201d Meanwhile, \u201cwe need Europe to stand united and to focus on the new industries of the future,\u201d Orsini emphasised. <\/p>\n

Competition from China is a major concern for the European industrial sector. \u201cAt the moment, we are increasingly concerned about competition from China,\u201d particularly regarding Beijing\u2019s practice of dumping on imports of goods entering Europe. \u201cWe know that Europe\u2019s trade deficit in 2025 stood at over 376 billion, of which 46 billion was attributable to Italy. This is therefore a concern that has an impact on the resilience of Italian industries,\u201d Orsini explained. Therefore, \u201cwhat we are asking for is to maintain those enabling conditions \u2013 many of which stem from decisions taken right here in Europe \u2013 for doing business in our country.\u201d The issue was discussed in depth during the meeting between the president of Confindustria and the Trade Commissioner: \u201cWith Commissioner \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, we also discussed, of course, how to tackle these issues \u2013 that is, how we can protect ourselves, and the question of reciprocity\u201d because \u201cit is obvious that this creates a dependency\u201d and \u201cwe are concerned,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
