Brussels \u2013 The approaching winter will be very difficult in terms of energy for citizens and businesses, and the European Union is working to assess additional measures to bring prices down, as agreed at last week\u2019s European Council by the leaders of the 27 Member States. This was emphasised by the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan J\u00f8rgensen<\/strong>, in Bratislava, where he met with the energy ministers of the Visegrad Group (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia).  <\/p>\n

In the press conference<\/a> from the Slovak capital, J\u00f8rgensen points out that energy prices are \u201cextremely high\u201d and that citizens are feeling the pinch of this situation \u201con a daily basis\u201d \u2013 \u201cat the petrol pump\u201d, \u201cwhen paying their bills\u201d or \u201cwhen turning on the heating.\u201d A situation in which the work done so far by Europe does not seem to be enough. On the one hand, \u201cwe are better prepared than we were in 2022<\/strong> \u2013 when Russia launched its terrible, large-scale invasion of Ukraine\u201d \u2013 because \u201cwe have greater diversification of our energy sources\u201d and \u201cwe are more energy-efficient,\u201d given that \u201cwe are using 18 per cent less gas than in 2022.\u201d So without the adoption of these kinds of measures, \u201cwe would have found ourselves in an even worse situation.\u201d On the other hand, however<\/strong>, \u201cwe find ourselves in a very difficult period,<\/strong>\u201d where<\/strong> \u201cthe global geopolitical situation is now affecting the Union as a whole.<\/strong>\u201d Furthermore, \u201cwe are heading into a winter that will be very difficult for many of our citizens,<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cour businesses are struggling to compete.<\/strong>\u201d In fact, \u201can extremely serious situation\u201d emerged at last week\u2019s European Council, where leaders concluded<\/a> that it is necessary to consider \u201cfurther efforts to bring prices down.\u201d And \u201cwe are doing just that,\u201d the Commissioner assures. <\/p>\n

In a crisis situation, the EU must \u201cdo its utmost to help citizens, with targeted and temporary measures,\u201d but without losing sight of the long-term strategy, which is \u201cvery clear\u201d and aims to make Europe free from its dependencies. \u201cWe used to depend on Russia; now we are moving away from that dependence, and that is a positive development,\u201d J\u00f8rgensen emphasises. \u201cBut the current situation shows us that we are now dependent on the global market,\u201d  he adds. Therefore, what is happening in the Middle East \u201ccan have repercussions for European citizens\u201d \u201cbecause we import too much.\u201d For this reason, \u201cour strategy is clear: we must break free from this dependence.<\/strong>\u201d Which, in short, means \u201crenewable energy, nuclear power, diversification, and energy efficiency.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Finally, the Commissioner believes that the energy issue affects not only citizens\u2019 pockets, but also their security. \u201cIn a turbulent world such as the one we live in today, energy security is also the security of our societies as a whole,\u201d he points out. And for this reason, he insists: \u201cDecarbonisation remains at the top of our political agenda,<\/strong>\u201d  not least because \u201cthis summer we saw how record temperatures caused problems even for some nuclear power stations in Europe, including in this region.\u201d These are \u201cextremely serious\u201d problems. But for J\u00f8rgensen, \u201csolutions do indeed exist,\u201d and the EU knows \u201cthe way out.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
