By setting new repairability requirements under the Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR), Brussels aims to support “the EU’s ambition to have a more circular and competitive economy.”

According to the European Commission, the future requirements “will help make a wide range of products placed on the EU market easier to repair, thereby extending their useful life and reducing waste.” For consumers, this will mean “more durable products, lower repair costs and more choice when it comes to repairing everyday items,” the Commission said.

The consultation is open to all interested parties: citizens, businesses, NGOs, public authorities and researchers. Brussels wants to understand the difficulties that consumers and repairers currently face, and what measures could improve the situation, including access to spare parts and the availability of repair and maintenance services.

The consultation and call for contributions will remain open until 9 February 2027. The responses will be incorporated into the impact assessment for a possible delegated act setting out the new repairability requirements provided for by the ESPR.

The regulation, described as “a cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to create a single market for sustainable products”, is currently being implemented through the 2025–2030 work plan.
