Brussels – More drones, officially not known to be Russian, were detected inside European airspace. This time, the targets were the airports of Copenhagen and Oslo (the latter, not being part of the EU, cooperates in defense matters). During the night, the two airports closed their airspace and grounded more than 50 aircraft. Two drones flew over the Danish airport of Kastrup, which was closed from 8.30 p.m. to 1 a.m. In Norway, the airport in Oslo suspended operations for a few hours from 00.30 last night, due to a similar threat.
Who is behind these incursions is still unclear. The words of the European Commission spokeswoman, Anitta Hipper, however, leave no doubt as to what Brussels thinks: “Russia is testing our borders,” although she later toned it down by adding that “investigations are ongoing.”
The Union is attempting to unite around the proposal for a drone wall to address this growing threat. At a meeting on Friday, the European Commission will discuss the matter with eight member states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria) and Ukraine.

Of course, the numerous incursions into EU airspace in recent weeks do not seem to be coincidental. Those that occurred yesterday, according to initial reconstructions, may have been launched from boats at sea, as the drones do not appear to have flown over the Baltic before arriving at the Danish airport. The two drones were not shot down, but disappeared on their own after threatening the airport. The police, based on these initial reconstructions, described the unknown perpetrators as “competent” individuals.
The first to be affected by such incursions was Poland: the entry of some twenty guided aircraft into the Polish skies had started the escalation. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed his opposition to Moscow during the UN Assembly.
“We know perfectly well that you don’t give a damn about international law,” the minister said, “and are fundamentally incapable of peaceful coexistence with your neighbors. The age of empires is over,” and that “your empire will never return! Every blow struck against you by Ukrainian soldiers — may God bless them — brings that day closer.” The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, had already warned: ‘We will shoot down suspicious aircraft if they enter our airspace.” Rhetoric of a war already underway.

There is growing suspicion that the series of crises unfolding across Europe may have a common origin. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was the one to connect the dots: “I cannot exclude that it is Russia. We have seen drones over Poland, activity in Romania, violations of Estonian airspace, hacker attacks against European airports.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov was not slow to speak out, describing the Danish suspicions as “unfounded.”
In Brussels, to counter the threat, there’s talk of building a drone wall. The European Commission is likely to commit to funding the initiative by providing financial support to countries bordering Russia. This will be discussed at Friday’s briefing between seven EU countries, plus Ukraine, and Ursula von der Leyen. It remains to be seen, however, how quickly the EU will act. According to the European Commission’s spokesman, Thomas Regnier, “reflections are still ongoing,” although the hope is to “act fast, quickly.” When asked, however, how the project will actually be structured, the determination waned: “This is not a technical conference.”
