Brussels – Changes coming for EU fire-fighting systems. The European Commission has adopted new measures restricting the use of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in foams used for fire extinguishing, under the REACH regulation, the EU chemicals legislation. The restriction marks “an important step” towards the Commission’s goal of minimising PFAS emissions, the EU executive emphasises. With these restrictions, it estimates cutting the emissions and production of about 470 tonnes of this type of chemical, along with the associated risks to the environment, soil, and water.
