    ASSOCIAZIONE MAMME NO PFAS

Brussels – Changes coming for EU fire-fighting systems. The European Commission has adopted new measures restricting the use of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in foams used for fire extinguishing, under the REACH regulation, the EU chemicals legislation. The restriction marks “an important step” towards the Commission’s goal of minimising PFAS emissions, the EU executive emphasises. With these restrictions, it estimates cutting the emissions and production of about 470 tonnes of this type of chemical, along with the associated risks to the environment, soil, and water.

This restriction will formally take effect 20 days after publication in the Official Journal. It will enter into force after a transition period of between 12 months and 10 years, depending on use, allowing for replacement by safer and more effective alternatives.
