Brussels – Intel did indeed violate EU competition rules, and therefore, the fine imposed by the European Commission in 2023 is justified, but not in the amount calculated in Brussels. The EU General Court recalculates the fine, reducing it by approximately 140 million euros. Compared to the EUR 376 million requested, the Luxembourg judges view that “an amount of 237,105,540 is a more appropriate reflection of the gravity and duration of the infringement at issue.” The EU Court therefore examines the merits of the EU executive’s calculation of Intel’s penalty, arguing that there were errors of assessment. Hence, the discount.
