Brussels – Italy has received the ninth instalment for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Following the approval at the end of April, the European Commission has transferred €12.8 billion to the state coffers. The decision to make the payment was taken yesterday (3 June), but the funds were disbursed today (4 June), officials in Brussels clarify. With this disbursement, “Italy reaches 85% of the resources earmarked by the plan,” stresses the Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, who commends the government for “an important result that confirms the implementation of the NRRP and its contribution to Italy’s growth and modernisation.”
The ninth instalment of the Italian NRRP will help fund a series of measures, including reforms and investments in sectors such as public administration, fiscal governance, justice, and public procurement, education, employment and the fight against undeclared work, research, healthcare, tourism and culture, as well as sustainable mobility, energy, agriculture and the transition to a circular economy. These are “funds that finance reforms and investments in sectors strategic for the country’s future,” Fitto stressed once again.
Italy is therefore continuing along the path it began in 2021, the year in which disbursements of EU funds from the Recovery Fund, which finances the NRRP, began. Of the €139.9 billion received so far, €24.9 billion was received in 2021 (pre-financing, disbursed on 13 August), 42 billion in 2022 (two instalments of 21 billion euros each, on 13 April and 8 November), and 35 billion euros in 2023 (an instalment of 18.5 billion euros on 9 October and an instalment of 16.5 billion euros on 28 December). A total of 19.7 billion euros was disbursed in 2024 (two separate instalments: the first of 11 billion euros on 5 August and the second of 8.7 billion euros on 23 December). On 1 December, Brussels approved the eighth tranche of 12.8 billion euros, paid on 30 December. On 29 April 2026, the ninth tranche was approved, and it was disbursed on 4 June 2026.
