Brussels – Denmark is the first country in the European Union to receive the final payment under the Recovery and Resiliency Facility (RRF), the main financial instrument of the NextGenerationEU package with its Recovery Fund. The European Commission today (31 July) disbursed a tranche of 359 million euros, bringing the total funds received by Copenhagen through the plan to 1.63 billion euros.

The Danish government applied for the final tranche on 21 May. It received the green light from the European Commission on 30 June 2026, following verification that the targets and reforms set out in the national plan had been met.

Denmark’s programmes include measures to reduce CO₂ emissions in the agricultural sector and to support the development of climate technologies. Copenhagen will also allocate European funds to reforms and investments aimed at accelerating the energy transition, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles. A significant proportion of the funds will also be used to improve the energy efficiency of buildings: around 28,000 homes will replace their oil or gas-fired heating systems with heat pumps or be connected to district heating networks. Finally, the plan provides for investments to support sustainable growth and the competitiveness of the Danish economy.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility, established as part of NextGenerationEU, was set up to mitigate the economic and social consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and to support Member States in moving towards more sustainable, resilient economies that are prepared for the challenges of the twin green and digital transitions.
