Brussels – The Eurozone posted a slight 0.3 percent GDP growth in the second quarter of the year compared with the first three months of this year,  according to preliminary data released by Eurostat today (Aug. 14). This +0.3 percent adds to an expansion by the same rate in the previous three months compared to the last quarter of 2023. Since the beginning of the year, therefore, GDP of the EU countries with the single currency recorded growth of 0.3 percent in the January-March and April-June periods.

Among the main eurozone economies bucking the trend and below the European average are Germany and Italy. In Germany, GDP contracted -0.1 percent compared to the first quarter of 2024, while in Italy, Gross Domestic Product grew 0.2 percent  in the second quarter. Growth in France was average, registering 0.3 percent. Spain performed definitively better, with 0.8 growth in both the first and second quarters of 2024.
