Brussels – Eastern Libya expelled the European delegation that had just arrived in the country to discuss new immigration measures.
The delegation, comprising the Interior Ministers of Italy, Greece, and Malta, as well as the European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, was stopped directly at Benina Airport in Benghazi, where all members of the delegation were declared persona non grata. The plane immediately left the airport.
A note from the government in this part of the country called the visit a “flagrant violation” of international conventions and Libyan law.
According to sources reported by the Greek daily Ekathimerini, the reason for this was that the European delegation first visited Tripoli, the seat of the internationally recognised Libyan government.
