Cirò Classico gains EU protection, enters the European PDO register

The Commission acknowledges the uniqueness of the Calabrian wine. Request submitted at the end of March has been approved

Brussels – ‘Made in Italy’ is enriched with one more product to be recognized for its quality and uniqueness: the European Commission has included Cirò Classico in the list of EU-protected foods and beverages, approving the request made at the end of March. Specifically, the Italian wine has been awarded the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) mark.

“Cirò Classico” is a red wine produced in Calabria. In the explanation accompanying the decision to recognize protection from counterfeiting, the Commission emphasizes that the wine has a ruby red color, an intense and complex aroma, and a full-bodied, harmonious, and lingering taste that tends to become velvety with age. It is appreciated for its intensity and complexity of fragrance, with aromas of red fruit and specific spicy notes. Its profile reflects the diversity of the soils and the centuries of winemaking experience in the area.
