Brussels – Good news for Made in Italy: Erbazzone Reggiano has received the EU quality label. The European Commission has decided to include the product in the European Union’s list of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

Erbazzone Reggiano – also known as ‘scarpazzone’ (scarpasòun in the Reggio Emilia dialect), is a herb-filled pie typical of Emilia-Romagna, consisting of two layers of dough and a filling of spinach, chard, breadcrumbs, and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, aged for at least 24 months. The top crust is sprinkled with crispy lardons. Whether round or rectangular, cooked or frozen, Erbazzone Reggiano
embodies the culinary heritage of a region renowned for its gastronomic
excellence. Its reputation is deeply rooted in local tradition, with
widespread recognition in Italian media, cookbooks, and food festivals.

With the designation granted today (27 March), the number of Italian agricultural products of recognised quality, certified and protected at the EU level , now stands at 328, comprising PDO (174) and PGI (154) products. Taking into account the 523 ‘Made in Italy’ wines already included in the lists of protected products at the EU level, comprising DOC (411) and PGI (112) labels, the total number of recognised and protected Italian food and wine products rises to 851. With the 36 Italian spirits, the total rises to 887 products.
