Tensions in Belgian government over recognition of Palestine. Foreign Minister warns: ‘We risk a serious crisis’

Brussels – The Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, told the daily De Standaard on Monday that he would not rule out blocking important government decisions if the parties continue to prevent him from taking a tougher stance on Israel and recognizing Palestine. “If the government does not take a tougher stance on human rights violations by the Israeli government or recognize Palestine, there is a risk of a serious crisis,” the minister warned.

His party, Les Engagés, together with the governing parties CD&V and Vooruit, wants to adopt a firmer stance towards Israel and recognize Palestine as a state, the Belgian news agency reports today.

However, the N-VA, the Flemish nationalist party of Premier Bart De Wever, and, in particular, the MR (Liberals) maintain a firm stance.

Previously, Sammy Mahdi, leader of the CD&V (centrists), had also threatened to block government dossiers if Belgium did not tighten its stance. The fact that Prévot, who is also deputy prime minister, is considering doing the same is putting further pressure on the government.

    Concrete proposals

“For me and my party, Gaza is indeed a crucial issue,” said the minister. “We absolutely must find a solution within the government. It is unacceptable that the attitude of one person should jeopardize the reputation of the entire country,” he said, referring to MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez.

On Wednesday, Prévot will present a memorandum containing “concrete proposals” during a meeting with Prime Minister Bart De Wever and his deputies.

The proposals include the recognition of Palestine, a ban on Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich entering the country, and prohibiting the import of goods from the occupied territories, as well as the overflight and transit of weapons to Israel.

“I cannot imagine Belgium joining the small club of countries that do not recognize Palestine,” Prévot said. “If we miss this boat, it will be a disaster for Belgium’s international image.”
