Eurostat revises eurozone inflation figure downwards: 1.9 per cent in December

The European statistics institute cut the cost of living by 0.1 percentage points in the last month of 2025. A more modest increase in food prices has an impact

Brussels – Counterorder: In December, inflation in the eurozone fell more than expected. Eurostat has corrected its preliminary estimates released at the beginning of the month and adjusted them downwards: compared to November, the cost of living fell by 0.2 percentage points instead of 0.1 points, from 2.1 per cent to 1.9 per cent.

Compared to the figures provided by the European Statistical Institute at the beginning of the month, there has been an upward variation in the cost of food (2.5 per cent, up from 2.4 per cent in November, but considered to be 2.6 per cent in preliminary estimates). Inflation calculations for the services category remained unchanged (3.4 per cent, compared to 3.5 per cent in November), as did the non-energy industrial goods category (0.4 per cent, compared to 0.5 per cent in November). The decline was more marked for energy (-1.9 per cent, compared to -0.5 per cent in November).

Nothing has changed for the main economies in the eurozone. A sharp decline in inflation in Germany (from 2.6 per cent to 2 per cent), a slight decrease in Spain (from 3.2 per cent to 3 per cent), and in France (from 0.8 per cent to 0.7 per cent). Italy bucked the trend, with inflation rising slightly (from 1.1 per cent to 1.2 per cent).
