Brussels – It’s now official: inflation in the euro area stood at 1.7 per cent in January, down 0.3 percentage points from December. Eurostat confirmed the preliminary estimates released at the beginning of the month, with services (3.2 per cent, compared to 3.4 per cent in December) and non-energy industrial goods (0.4 per cent, compared to 0.3 per cent in December) remaining unchanged. On the other hand, food, alcohol, and tobacco (2.6 per cent, down 0.1 percentage points compared to December instead of 0.2 pp) and energy (-4 per cent, down 1.1 percentage points compared to December instead of 1.2 pp) were revised.
