Brussels – Limoges ceramics are now protected at the EU level: the European Commission has awarded France the first quality label for non-agricultural products. Limoges ceramics have been granted a geographical indication (GI) under the new legislation on geographical indications for craft and industrial products (CIGI). “Made in France” porcelain thus becomes the first product to be protected at the European level against imitations and misuse, while recognising the strong link between quality, reputation, and geographical origin. The European Commission notes that, since the geographical indication system for craft and industrial products came into force on 1 December 2025, 74 applications have been submitted by Member States, including the Czech Republic, France, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Sweden, relating to products such as ceramics, textiles, embroidery, and cutlery.
