Brussels – The European Parliament, with 344 votes in favour, 234 against and 25 abstentions, has decided to waive the immunity of the head of the Forza Italia delegation, Fulvio Martusciello, accepting the request from the Belgian public prosecutor’s office in connection with  the investigation into the so-called Huaweigate. However, the waiver was not granted for Salvatore De Meo, also a member of Forza Italia.

“I return to the chamber fully aware that I am completely unconnected to the allegations, as I have already demonstrated during my hearing,” Martusciello had stated. “I am satisfied with the defence put forward by my party, which has fully understood the points I have set out at length. We will continue to explain my complete lack of involvement in the alleged events. I am facing this matter with composure and with full respect for the institutions, confident that every relevant piece of evidence will help to definitively clarify my position,” concluded the leader of FI in Brussels.

The Huawei case broke in March 2025, involving the arrest of several lobbyists linked to the Chinese telecoms firm, who are suspected of attempting to bribe around fifteen current and former MEPs.
