Brussels – Damage caused by bad weather: the European Parliament has approved a 74.9 million euro package to support Italy following Cyclone Harry in early 2026, which struck Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. The funds come from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF), and the plenary session approved their release with 651 votes in favour, 17 against and 3 abstentions.
Support from the EUSF helps fund emergency and recovery operations, such as the restoration of energy, water, sewerage, telecommunications and transport infrastructure, as well as health and education services. The aid also covers cleanup operations, temporary accommodation and relief services, as well as measures to secure and strengthen prevention infrastructure and protect cultural heritage.
“The vote is a positive step, but what is needed now is a commitment from the Italian government to allocate all the necessary funds to repair the damaged infrastructure and prevent further disasters,” said Giuseppe Antoci and Pasquale Tridico, MEPs from the Five Star Movement, in a joint statement.
