Brussels – The Socialists & Democrats (S&D) group in the European Parliament has once again elected the Umbrian MEP Camila Laureti from the Democratic Party as vice-president. The announcement was made yesterday (21 October) by the PD Europa delegation on its social media channels. “Now let’s continue working together to build a completely different Europe – one that is more united, free and a leading force. Good luck, Camilla!” the MEPs said.
Laureti thanked “my colleagues in the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, and in particular the PD delegation, for the trust they have once again placed in me,” stressing that for her “it is an honour to continue this work alongside our group, at a particularly delicate time for Europe and for the political balance in so many countries.” According to the MEP, at present “we need a European budget that is up to the task, and we need to strengthen the Union’s social pillar and the values of cohesion”, as well as “revitalising the EU’s diplomatic role, so that it can contribute more effectively to the resumption of dialogue and the relaunch of peace processes.” This “is all the more urgent in the face of a right-wing that is seeking to unite its various factions, undermining the values and achievements on which the European project itself is founded, which is threatened by international sovereignist tendencies,” she added.
The Umbria branch of the PD described Laureti’s re-election in an Instagram post as “wonderful news for our region and for the entire Democratic Party.” According to the party, this is “a position of immense responsibility which demonstrates, once again, the value of the work carried out in Brussels and the strong ties with our region.” From “environmental protection to agriculture and rights, Camilla continues to be a key figure for Umbria in Europe,” her colleagues said. “Never before has the role of our political family been so crucial in defending the EU, strengthening the integration process and building a stronger Union,” concluded the re-elected Vice-President (S&D).
