Brussels – Pierre Moscovici is leaving the European Court of Auditors. The former European Commissioner for Economic Affairs and former Minister of Finance has tendered his resignation from the European Court of Auditors, the institution said in a statement. Moscovici is stepping down from the post he has held since 1 January 2026 “for personal reasons”, the statement explains, without going into further detail.
France will now have to select a successor to Moscovici, and it will be up to the Council of the EU, after consulting the Parliament, to appoint the French member of the European Court of Auditors. Moscovici will, however, remain in office until his successor has been appointed.
Moscovici, aged 69, before serving as European Commissioner (1 November 2014 – 1 December 2019) and French Minister of Finance (16 May 2012 – 31 May 2014), served as Minister for European Affairs (4 June 1997 – 6 May 2002) and Vice-President of the European Parliament (20 July 2004 – 25 June 2007).
