Brussels – The Lega’s extraordinary congress opens tomorrow in Milan and will conclude on Sunday 25 October. Matteo Salvini is attending the event with the aim of securing confirmation of his leadership and of the political line pursued to date. On the eve of the congress, the delegation of Lega MEPs in the European Parliament has rallied behind him, issuing a statement in which they unanimously express “full support for Matteo Salvini’s candidacy for Federal Secretary.”
MEPs emphasise the role they play in Europe: “In Brussels, the Lega acts as a bulwark against a centralist Europe that seeks to reduce the role of Member States to that of mere administrators and undermines the decision-making autonomy of the regions, ignoring their strategic importance in the protection and development of individual territories.” Together with their allies in the Patriots for Europe group, they add, the party is “at the forefront of concrete battles against ideological policies that penalise our productive sectors and increase costs for families and businesses.”
The focus is also on the international scene. “In an increasingly unstable international context, we need a united and determined Lega, capable of making the voice of Italy and its regions heard without being subservient,” writes the delegation.
The hope for the conference proceedings is for an “open and constructive debate” and an outcome “that strengthens the party in its irreplaceable role in revitalising the country.”
