Europeans back Democrats in US mid-term elections, Polling Europe Euroscope data show

The highest percentage is in Italy (64 per cent), according to a survey by the research firm formed through a partnership between SWG and OpinionWay. Even among right-wing voters, there is a stronger desire for the Democratic Party to win

Brussels – Almost three in five Europeans (58 per cent) would like to see the Democratic Party win the mid-term elections in the United States. Only 18 per cent back the Republican Party, while nearly one in four (24 per cent) say they do not support either party. These are Europeans’ views on the results of the US mid-term elections, as revealed by the latest poll from Polling Europe Euroscope, a Brussels-based market research and polling company, a collaboration between SWG and OpinionWay, which Eunews obtained in an exclusive preview.

In the five countries analysed in greater detail, a clear majority hope for a Democratic victory. The highest percentage is in Italy (64 per cent), followed by Germany (60 per cent), France and Spain (both at 58 per cent) and Poland (43 per cent). One in four Spaniards (25 per cent) and one in four Poles (25 per cent) support the Republicans. However, these are the highest figures because in Germany (18 per cent), Italy (14 per cent), and France (12 per cent), the Republican Party garners less than 20 per cent of support.

It also emerges that support for the Democrats exceeds that for the Republicans even among right-wing voters. While it seems natural that the Democratic Party should receive 80 per cent support from voters of the Green, 74 per cent of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), and 71 per cent from The Left voters, it is somewhat less predictable that 45 per cent of support comes from those who vote for the Patriots for Europe (PfE) and 41 per cent from voters for the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). By comparison, support for the Republicans among voters from these last three groups is lower: 33 per cent (ECR), 32 per cent (PfE) and 31 per cent (ESN). Finally, 68 per cent of People’s Party (EPP) supporters and 69 per cent of Liberal (Renew Europe) supporters hope for a Democratic victory next Tuesday, while the proportion of those hoping for a Republican victory is below 20 per cent in all other political groups: Renew (18 per cent), EPP (17 per cent), the Greens and S&D (both 13 per cent), and The Left (10 per cent).

    Cooperation between countries

The issue – no longer a taboo or a secret – of deteriorating relations with the US partner prompts reflection on what cooperation between countries entails and how it is carried out. For the citizens surveyed, the top priority area for cooperation between countries is the defence of human rights (60 per cent of responses). This is followed by ‘Natural disasters and pandemics’ (57 per cent), ‘Environmental protection and climate change’ (54 per cent), ‘Defence in the event of an invasion by another country’ (48 per cent), ‘Aid to poor countries’ (43 per cent), ‘Limiting the excessive power of major economic players’ (40 per cent), ‘Fair access to technology’ (30 per cent) and ‘Fiscal imbalances between countries’ (26 per cent).

Among the five countries analysed, Italy’s top three priorities are ‘Environmental protection and climate change’ (62 per cent), ‘Defence of human rights’ (61 per cent) and ‘Natural disasters and pandemics’ (55 per cent).  The same three categories appear in the top three positions – albeit with different percentages – in the other countries surveyed as well, except Poland, where the category ‘Defence in the event of an invasion by another country’ ranks higher than environmental protection (the fourth most popular choice).

These same three issues are also the most popular choices depending on the electorate group to which voters belong: among the centrist groups – S&D, the Greens, Renew Europe – and The Left, while amongst the People’s Party (EPP), conservatives (ECR) and sovereigntists (ESN), defence takes precedence over the environment, which ranks fourth. Among the far-right Patriots (PfE), however, the top three priorities mirror those chosen by the pro-European parties: cooperation should take place in the event of natural disasters (57 per cent), in defence of human rights (49 per cent) and to protect the environment (48 per cent).

The survey was conducted online using the CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) methodology on a representative sample of the European Union population aged 18 and over. The total sample size comprises 5,067 complete interviews, distributed proportionally across the populations of the 27 EU countries, with a slight adjustment to enable pan-European analysis of the data, including breakdowns for the five most populous countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland) and across three different geographical areas: Central and Eastern Europe, Northern Europe and Southern Europe. For each country, proportional quotas were established by age and gender, calculated using the most recent parameters from Eurostat. The interviews were conducted between 21 and 30 September 2026.
