DiscoverEU is back: EU Commission offers 36,000 free passes to 18-year-olds to explore Europe

Brussels – Again this year, the European Union opens the doors of its cultural and historical wealth and diversity to thousands of young people. From April 2 to April 16 at noon, young people born between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007, can apply for the DiscoveryEU initiative, which allows them to win a free rail pass in the 27 EU member states and countries associated with the Erasmus+ program (Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey).

To participate, one must apply through the European Youth Portal and complete a short quiz on the European Union. The 36,000 passes for grabs will go to those with the best score while tickets last. As for the trips, these can be taken with the DiscoverEU card for 30 days, between July 1 and September 30, 2025, with the option for kids to customize their itinerary or choose from suggested ones. For example, it is possible to follow the New European Bauhaus Route, dedicated to architecture and innovation, or the Green Route, which features the continent’s most sustainable locations — the winners of the “Green Capital” contest — and numerous parks and nature reserves.

DiscoverEU also gives a discount card for thousands of offers on transportation, museums, lodging, dining, sports, and entertainment in 36 countries. Regarding accessibility, participants with disabilities, health problems, or fewer opportunities can take advantage of additional support. There are also benefits for those living in remote areas or islands.
