Romania’s Constitutional Court rejects Simion’s appeal, citing ‘unfounded allegations’

Brussels – The Romanian Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the appeal filed by far-right candidate George Simion, seeking the annulment of the presidential runoff held on Sunday (May 18), won by centrist Nicușor Dan. According to the judges, the allegations of foreign interference were ‘groundless‘. This morning’s (May 22) decision is final, while the motivations will be published in the coming days.

Simion, a Eurosceptic, and avowedly pro-Trump leader, did not accept the court’s verdict: “The Constitutional Court has continued the state coup by rejecting our appeal,” he wrote on his social channels shortly after the ruling. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians leader had denounced alleged interference from France and Moldova, speaking of “an orchestrated maneuver to manipulate the institutions and direct the vote.”

The Permanent Electoral Authority had already certified the regularity of the electoral process, describing it as “correct, transparent, and integral”, stigmatizing the spreading of false information and accusing those disseminating it of wanting to “undermine citizens’ trust in state institutions.” The Romanian Constitutional Court had also rejected, on March 6, the appeal lodged by Călin Georgescu, the former pro-Russian candidate excluded from the runoff, challenging the annulment of the first round of elections. However, the judges had declared his allegations of procedural violations by the State unfounded.

President-elect Nicușor Dan, who obtained 53.6 percent of the vote against Simion’s 46.4 percent, will be officially proclaimed head of state. In an initial statement, he promised stability and Euro-Atlantic continuity. “Romania will remain firmly anchored in NATO, the European Union, and the strategic partnership with the United States.” Dan will now face the delicate phase of forming a new executive and the imperative of containing the massive public deficit. The shadow of the ultra-right, however, is not fading. Simion has promised battle online: “I will fight, fight, fight to make Romania great again!”

My mission has always been to ensure and safeguard #democracy for the Romanian people. Something I feel that they have never truly had.
While I’m target of latest attempt of this injustice, I refuse to play the victim.

I will Fight, Fight, Fight to
    Make #Romania Great Again!
