Brussels – The European Union has no weight in international politics. This was claimed by Mario Draghi, speaking at the Rimini Meeting, explaining that the illusion of a Europe with geopolitical power “has evaporated.”
Draghi pointed out that the EU has been a spectator to events such as when “Iranian nuclear sites were bombed and the Gaza massacre intensified,” highlighting its lack of influence. According to the former prime minister, there is instead a need to transform itself from a supporting to a leading actor by reforming its political organisation.
For the former ECB chief, it is also important to introduce a common debt to finance large-scale European projects, especially in key areas such as defence, energy, and technology.
The former prime minister then concluded his speech in Rimini by urging European citizens to turn scepticism into action, emphasising that the Union is an instrument to achieve shared goals and guarantee a future of growth.
