Sarkozy found guilty of ‘conspiracy’ over Libyan funds

Brussels – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a trial in which he is accused (with the help of a couple of associates) of having made a corrupt pact with the regime of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to receive funding for the 2007 presidential election campaign (which he won).

Sarkozy was acquitted of the corruption charge but found guilty ‘only’ of criminal conspiracy’. The prosecution asked for a seven-year sentence for him, but this will be decided at a later date.

Sarkozy continues to proclaim his innocence and is expected to appeal.
