Brussels – In June, eurozone inflation stood at 2.8 per cent, down 0.4 percentage points on May (3.2 per cent). Eurostat confirmed the preliminary figures published earlier this month, although it revised the items in the reference basket. According to the preliminary estimates, the main factor driving inflation down in June was the fall in energy costs (8.5 per cent compared with the preliminary 8.7 per cent, and from 10.8 per cent in May), coupled with a fall in services (3.2 per cent from 3.5 per cent in May), and a drop in the food, alcohol, and tobacco category (1.5 per cent compared with the preliminary 1.6 per cent and from 1.9 per cent in May). Contrary to preliminary estimates, the cost of industrial goods is not stable but is falling (0.7 per cent from 0.9 per cent in May).
