The event is hosted by the Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament, Pina Picierno and Antonella Sberna, while the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, will address the event via a video message. Jean Todt will speak about the “silent pandemic” – road traffic accidents, which kill nearly two million people worldwide every year and are the leading cause of death among children and young people aged between 5 and 29. Tzitzikostas will deliver the closing remarks, ahead of the round-table discussion on the EU’s commitment to safer roads.
Two studies will be presented to European decision-makers: RoadSafeAI 2.0 from the Politecnico di Milano, led by Professor Sergio Savaresi, a model that employs a predictive approach – that is, it utilises millions of pieces of telematics data from vehicles, traffic information and road network characteristics to estimate the risk level in different urban areas – where over 73 per cent of road accidents occur – identifying the most critical areas in advance; “Safety by Design” by the MIT Senseable City Lab, led by Professor Carlo Ratti, proposes a ‘data-driven’ approach to road safety and the design of urban spaces, enabling the early identification of risk areas and the implementation of targeted urban redesign measures, moving beyond planning based solely on historical accident data or traffic flow management.
Speakers will include Enrico San Pietro, Insurance General Manager at Unipol Assicurazioni, who sees the utilisation of data as an opportunity to generate collective value and as a strategic lever for guiding public decision-making and promoting more effective policies and the Prefect Renato Cortese, Director of the Traffic Police and Special Units of the State Police, who will speak on the value of collaboration between institutions and businesses in improving road safety, notably in light of the memorandum of understanding signed between Unipol and the State Police, aimed at promoting the sharing of anonymous and aggregated data, the analysis of critical issues on the road network, and the implementation of educational and training initiatives aimed primarily at young people.
Confirmed speakers at the round-table discussion include MEP Matteo Ricci, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Transport at the European Parliament, and Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).
