EU arms Ukraine: “Supply of ammunition, missiles and anti-aircraft systems will continue”

Clear message to Moscow in the European Council conclusions. With missiles and other "long-term assistance to deter future aggression"

Brussels – Military support to Ukraine will continue, as already established and with renewed efforts. That means more ammunition, missiles, and anti-aircraft systems. On the day Kyiv obtained the start of negotiations for EU membership that  President Volodymyr Zelensky requested, the 27 heads of State confirmed and revived assistance in an anti-Russian direction. The message, clearly stated in the EU Heads of State and Government Summit conclusions, is that “the European Union and its member states will continue to respond to Ukraine’s pressing military and defense needs.”

The leaders of the 27 Member States are determined to ensure “timely, predictable, and sustainable military support for Ukraine” from here on out. This will be achieved through the European Peace Facility (European Peace Facility, EPF), an EU military assistance mission, and direct bilateral assistance from member states that can be provided individually. This renewed momentum aims to fulfill the promise to supply the Ukrainian armed forces with what they need as soon as possible. In particular, there is an “urgent need to accelerate the delivery of missiles and ammunition, particularly under the artillery ammunition initiative, and to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems.”

The Ukrainian military needs the necessary supplies as soon as possible. The message to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is that the EU is determined to keep the point and contribute to the defense and counteroffensive of the Russian military. “The European Union and its member states remain committed to contributing, for the long term and together with partners, to security commitments to Ukraine.” A passage signifying that the Eurozone’s mobilization for Kyiv will neither be an isolated phenomenon nor limited to this precise moment in history. Ukraine is now in the EU orbit and no longer in that of Moscow – this is the geopolitical meaning of this passage. These long-term political and military commitments “will help Ukraine defend itself, resist destabilization efforts, and deter acts of aggression in the future.”
