Bloom NGO assesses EU Parliament groups’ support for green issues: Greens/EFA first, Conservatives and Reformists last

Brussels – To evaluate political groups and individual parties based on their votes on ecological issues: This is the purpose and the result of the report of Bloom, a French NGO that deals with eco-sustainability. It emerges that, as could be expected, the group with the most votes in favour of ecological standards are the Greens/EFA, while the worst is the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) party. Among the Italian parties, the most “green” turns out to be the 5 Star Movement.

Climate justice, oceans, climate, and biodiversity were the parameters Bloom used to compile its ranking. The NGO measured, in the 2019-2024 legislature, the votes of both individual MEPs and groups on legislation that addressed these issues. In the final stage, a score of 0 to 20 was assigned to each group and national delegation. The result was that Greens/EFA scored 19.8 ranking first, The Left 19, Socialists and Democrats (S&D) 16.6, Renew 11.9, the unattached 11.4, the European People’s Party (EPP) 3.8, Identity and Democracy (ID) 3.3, and last the Conservatives and Reformists Europeans (ECR) 2.5.

The result of Bloom’s report shows that the parliament is deeply divided into two highly polarized groups: on the one hand, the left-wing parties are compact in supporting green measures, and on the other hand, the right-wing parties are firm in opposing them. Between these, Renew and the unattached lean once to one side and another to the other, ending up being the actual needle in the scale. Indeed, within the Liberal (Renew) group, the national delegations were more or less attentive to green issues according to the nation of origin: the Slovaks scored 16.95 versus 5.43 for the Czechs.

For Bloom, the Italian delegation that most supported green policies was the 5 Star Movement, scoring 18.10 out of 20. According to MEP Maria Angela Danzì: “The result of the survey is a medal on our chest because it testifies to the decisive role we have played in recent years in affirming the Green Deal and policies related to the environmental transition,” said the 5 Star member in a note, then attacking the other Italian delegations: “It is no surprise that among the last five places in the ranking, as many as three parties are Italian. Fratelli d’Italia gets a meagre 2.17, the Lega 2.06, while Forza Italia does even worse with an unedifying 1.99.”

However, Bloom’s report cards are not the endpoints but the starting ones. The French NGO has drawn up a list of 15 points and is asking future MEPs to sign it. The list includes a number of commitments to save the oceans, safeguard the climate, reduce the use of fossil fuels, and limit the use of plastics.
