Brussels – The European Union has sent 82 tonnes of essential supplies to Nepal, which is facing the tragic aftermath of one of the most devastating floods in recent decades. In addition, the European Commission is providing a further 500,000 euros for the emergency response and to coordinate aid from European countries. Organised in collaboration with UNICEF, the air bridge flight landed this morning (4 September) carrying supplies from EU stocks for nutrition, health, water and sanitation, shelter, education and protection. The additional 500,000 euros will be channelled through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund, enabling local teams to address the most urgent needs. Separately, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Luxembourg, Germany, Latvia and Norway are sending equipment including life jackets, hygiene and kitchen kits, blankets, medical supplies, personal protective equipment and emergency power equipment.
This additional aid comes on top of the EU’s ongoing response. On 28 August, the Commission allocated 2 million euros in emergency humanitarian aid, in addition to the nearly 3 million euros already allocated to Nepal in 2026 for disaster preparedness. EU-funded partners are assisting on the ground, whilst the Copernicus emergency satellite mapping system has been activated and EU rapid response and logistics coordinators have been deployed to Asia.
“Europe stands with the Nepalese people. We are supporting emergency responders and getting emergency aid to those who need it: clean water, medicine for hospitals, shelter for families sleeping in the open, and psychological support for the grieving,” commented the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib.
