Gozi (Renew): in EU no majority with Meloni

Renew's co-lead candidate tells la Repubblica daily: "From the Italian premier yet another lie. Besides, also her candidacy is a deception."

Brussels –“In Europe, there is no room for a majority other than the current one. The numbers are not there. Under any circumstances. This is yet another lie from a premier used to tell them.” Sandro Gozi, one of the three leading candidates of the Renew Europe liberals in France, said this in an interview with the La Repubblica daily.

“Besides, her candidacy is a deception since she is running in all five constituencies but will never set foot in the European Parliament,” Gozi added. “I understand that in the election campaign, one can dream and also that Giorgia Meloni cannot stop lying since it is a compulsive habit, but this time, we are beyond propaganda.”

“The leitmotiv that Meloni, Salvini, and Tajani repeat, namely that Europe is one big Italy, that the Italian government can be replicated in Strasbourg, is not credible,” Gozi added. According to the polls, even if they wanted to, the EPP, ECR, and ID would not have the necessary majority.”

According to the Secretary General of the European Democratic Party and Renew’s Team Europe member, “the only possible alliance to govern the EU is between Renew, the EPP, and the Socialists. It is up to the Populars to decide whether they want to continue the virtuous path taken five years ago or to put themselves in the tow of right-wing extremists who have now replaced the conservative right. As far as we are concerned, Meloni, Vox, and Zemmour, who are in the ECR, are no different from Salvini, Le Pen, and Sweden Democrats, who are in ID.”

“Every step Von der Leyen takes toward Meloni and the ECR is a step that distances her from us because Renew will never reach an understanding with Meloni. Tajani speaks falsely when he claims the opposite, that we would be ready to talk with the Italian Premier. I think he should stop,” Gozi concluded.
