EU names Johannes Hahn as special envoy for Cyprus reunification

Brussels – The European Commission has appointed Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus. The choice, announced yesterday (May 14), represents a renewed EU commitment to supporting a lasting peace process on the island within the framework of the United Nations. Hahn will report directly to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and will work closely with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.

Cyprus has been divided into a Turkish Cypriot north and a Greek Cypriot south since 1974 when Turkish forces invaded the island in response to a Greek-backed coup. Ankara does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member country that is instead recognized internationally as the sole sovereign authority over the entire island. The Turkish Cypriot north is recognized only by Turkey. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, in a post on X, welcomed Hahn’s appointment, pointing out that it represents “tangible proof that the EU stands firmly and resolutely with Cyprus and its people.”

The mandate of the Special Envoy, which will have an initial term of one year, will be to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved, promote mutual confidence-building measures, and create the conditions for the resumption of the long-stalled inter-EU negotiations. Johannes Hahn brings with him a long institutional experience: he served as a European Commissioner for three consecutive terms, dealing with Regional Policy, Enlargement, and, most recently, Budget and Administration. In addition to his Commission posts, Hahn shares political orientation with von der Leyen: they are both European People’s Party members. Johannes Hahn was Minister of Science and Research in Austria and a member of the Viennese regional government.

Thank you President @vonderleyen for your leadership. The appointment of Johannes Hahn as your Special Envoy to support UN led efforts to reunify Cyprus, in line with UNSCRs and EU law, is tangible proof that the EU stands firmly and resolutely with Cyprus and its people, pic.twitter.com/vcgRv8U43z
