Brussels – Tesla car sales plummeted 40 per cent across Europe in July compared to the previous year. Competition from Chinese rival BYD weighed on this result.

According to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), 8,837 Tesla cars were sold last month across the EU, the European Free Trade Association and the UK. Last year, sales in the same period were 14,769 units.

Meanwhile, BYD’s new car registrations in Europe more than tripled to 13,503 last month, compared to 4,151 the previous year. According to ACEA, BYD now has a market share of 1.2 per cent, while Tesla’s share remains at 0.8 per cent.
