Iranian opposition speaks out in Brussels: ‘Stop concessions, support the people’

From all over Europe, tens of thousands of people gathered in the EU capital to demand a change of pace. 'The people can bring a regime change'

Brussels – “Stop the executions in Iran!” “Activate the sanctions mechanism now!” There are tens of thousands of them (the Belgian police speak of 10,000 people in all), arriving from all over Europe, to shout and show their indignation at a regime, the one in power in Iran, still left too free to act. The Iranian opposition in exile is demanding a change of pace from the European Union: an end to appeasement — meaning dialogue and concessions in exchange for avoiding confrontation — in favor of a policy of supporting the population to overthrow the power from within.

“Iranian society is in a volatile state, and the only solution is the Third Option, neither appeasement nor war, but regime change by the people and their organized resistance!” said Maryam Rajavi, elected president of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), who urges the EU to “designate the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.” She adds, “Do not delay enforcing UN Security Council resolutions against the regime’s nuclear projects any longer,” the other suggestion to the twelve-star politician. Because, she explains, “Giving more time to this regime will once again bring war, and that must never be allowed!”

Rajavi delivered the speech at the Atomium, the large structure built for the 1958 World Expo and one of the landmarks of Brussels. It was here that Iranians in exile, coming from Germany, France, Italy, and all of Europe, gathered. And it was from here that people then marched towards the city centre. “This immense, massive presence of Iranian people from outside Iran is proof that there is effectively a democratic alternative to the cruel and criminal mullahs’ regime,” said Guy Verhofstadt, former Belgian prime minister and long-time European parliamentarian, who was present at the rally. Verhofstadt calls on the EU to act against Iran as it did with Russia: not only individual sanctions but also “on its vital financial branches, such as banks and the oil sector.”

The National Council of Resistance of Iran is considered a viable and credible “alternative” to the current regime in power in Iran. It is no coincidence that Verhofstad calls for a “structured dialogue” with the NCRI. The ten-point plan that wants to transform the country into a republic aligned to Western values (true gender equality, with freedom of dress and equal career, respect for human rights with the signing of the universal declaration, separation of state and religion) represents the foundations for a future-proof Iran. Iranians are coming to Brussels to tell the EU and its states that there is another Iran, but that it needs European input.
