Šefčovič: EU working with the US and Italy on the pasta dispute; it is a priority for Brussels

Brussels – “What we understand from the US, but of course we are verifying it, is that they have not received adequate information or enough information or enough detail from some pasta producers in Italy,” said European Trade Commissioner Maros Šefčovič, at a press conference in Rome with Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida. He assured that the Union has taken to heart the dispute opened by the United States against some Italian pasta producers, accused of unfair competition for placing pasta on the US market at illegally low prices, thereby creating a situation of dumping.

​“What we are doing, right now, in close cooperation with the Italian government and with the producers, is to provide all this detailed information and to negotiate on this issue with the American partners and the Italian government, with the full support of our Directorate General for Trade, our experts,” he said. “We are working on this issue and collaborating until the end, and I hope we will have the best results then. It is clearly one of our priorities.”

“On pasta, as you know, there are some steps in the anti-dumping investigation. This was a very surprising move by the United States towards the European Union, towards the pasta producers. But at the same time, I know that this issue has been on the table for quite some time,” he added.
