Brussels – Good news for “Made in Italy”: the European Commission has approved the inclusion of the Strawberry of Basilicata in the EU list of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI). The Protected Geographical Indication “Strawberry of Basilicata” recognises strawberries with a deep, bright red colour and a naturally sweet and fruity flavour, typical of the region.
The quality of strawberries from Basilicata is the result of the favourable soil and climatic conditions of the geographical areas, as well as the experience of the region’s farmers, who have a long tradition in growing and using the fruit. The production area includes the municipalities of Bernalda, Montalbano Jonico, Montescaglioso, Nova Siri, Pisticci, Policoro, Rotondella, Scanzano Jonico, and Tursi.
