Brussels – One of the buildings at the European Parliament’s Brussels headquarters will be named after David Sassoli. The announcement was made by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Pina Picierno, in a post on X. “A short while ago, in the Bureau of the European Parliament, we wrote a page of remembrance and commitment,” wrote the MEP from the Democratic Party. For Nicola Zingaretti, head of the Democratic Party delegation, it was a “beautiful and fitting” decision, a tribute to a figure who “embodied the highest values of our institutions.”

The Treves Building, located on the esplanade of the European Parliament in Brussels, will be named after Sassoli, the late president who died on 11 February 2022 from complications of an immune system disorder. The square is home to buildings dedicated to other great figures of the European project, from Altiero Spinelli to Paul Henri Spaak.

“Naming one of the EP buildings after David Sassoli is not only a fitting tribute to a great Europeanist and senior representative of the EU institutions, but also a commitment to the path that Europe must take. David embodied the values of Europe more than anyone else: federal, supportive, fair, and democratic,” commented Camilla Laureti, MEP for the Democratic Party and vice-president of the Socialists and Democrats group.
