ENVI - Election of the new Chair

Brussels – Pierfrancesco Maran, MEP for the Democratic Party, was elected chair of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI), replacing Antonio Decaro, who resigned after winning the regional elections in Puglia last November.

The secret ballot was held yesterday evening (9 February) within the Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Food Security. Maran, a member of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, received 59 votes in favour, while the other candidate, Roman Haider of Austria from the European Conservatives and Reformists group, received 19 votes.

After his election, the MEP stated: “It is a great responsibility and honour to be elected as Chair of the ENVI Committee. This historic moment demands great resolve. We must continue the transition we have embarked on by implementing the Green Deal, which is effectively a freedom deal that helps us strengthen European autonomy through energy and resource independence.”

Maran, born in Milan in 1980, emphasised: “To succeed, we need massive investments – as the Draghi report underlines – and an alliance with our citizens and businesses. We must prove that our environmental goals are the engine of our prosperity, not a brake on our progress.  I look forward to working with all Members in a spirit of service to lead this change.”
