Automotive, Gori (PD) rapporteur on Parliament’s opinion for the simplification package

Brussels – Giorgio Gori, MEP for the Democratic Party and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, will be the European Parliament’s rapporteur for the opinion on the proposal for regulatory simplification for the European automotive sector. The ninth Omnibus package, presented by the European Commission in mid-December, will be discussed in the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), of which the former mayor of Bergamo is vice-chair.

Part of a broader package of five proposals to support the sector, the automotive omnibus package aims to cut red tape and reduce costs for European manufacturers, with the dual objective of strengthening their position on international markets and freeing up resources for the transition to climate neutrality. According to the Commission’s calculations, European companies will save around 706 million euros per year.

Brussels has also proposed introducing streamlined type-approval procedures for vans and heavy-duty vehicles and promoting the adoption of zero-emission vehicles, especially small, lower-cost models, without compromising the high safety and environmental protection standards already in place in the European regulatory framework. In the negotiations between EU co-legislators, it will be interesting to see the final definition of small electric cars, with a view to proposing targeted incentives within the vehicle CO2 emissions standards.
