Von der Leyen: “We can do it; our Union has already overcome one energy crisis”

The President of the European Commission: "Pessimism is corrosive to democracy; let’s imagine a better tomorrow and work for it"

Brussels – Do not be afraid. Instead, have faith in the European Union and its ability to stand firm in the most difficult times. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is preaching optimism and hope. Faced with the uncertainties of war in Iran and unprecedented energy shocks, she urges people not to let themselves be overwhelmed by negativity and emotions. “Our Union has already overcome one energy crisis, through unity and determination,” von der Leyen recalled in her speech delivered on the occasion of the award of the Lower Saxony Regional Medal.

The EU Commission President is referring to the high energy costs resulting from Russia’s war in Ukraine since 2022. The EU has made it through, perhaps with difficulty, but still managed to overcome it, and the same will be true this time: this is the message sent from Hanover. “How often have I been told over the past six years that Europe would not be able to do this or that? From overcoming the pandemic to ensuring our independence from Russian energy supplies. From supporting Ukraine to backing Greenland,” von der Leyen recalls aloud. It is by recalling the European Union’s recent challenges that the President of the European Commission draws strength to highlight the resilience of the integration project and tell all EU citizens that “we can do it!”

Von der Leyen wants to dispel the atmosphere of pessimism, because that is the last thing the European Union and its citizens need. “We are living at a time when many people fear for the future.  When many people’s confidence that things will be better for their children is wavering. That pessimism is corrosive – not only to individuals but to democracy.” This reference to trust as a cure for democracy draws on the political legacy of David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, who passed away far too soon and who saw the fight against mistrust and negativity as the key to a strong and healthy Europe. Hence, von der Leyen’s call, which originates from the government of Lower Saxony but applies to all levels of local and central European power: “We must be able to imagine a tomorrow that is better than today. And work for it.”
